2025 Summer Meeting and Picnic

Our 2025 Summer Picnic was held at the Fenton, Mi. VFW post 3243 on August 9th. We had a great turnout of 23 members plus a number of wives and guests. Notable attendee Dale Abbuhl who made the trip from Florida to attend the meeting. We also had a guests and potential new member Bill Wert and his wife Jennifer who were invited guests of Matt Greca. The weather was exceptionally hot but the venue pavilion offered great shade and a gentle breeze, with lots of liquids available the heat was not a problem.

The day started with coffee and doughnuts at 9:00 hours. At 12:00 hours American and Italian subs with condiments, chips, cookies and beverage was served.

After lunch and some socializing a brief business meeting was held. Treasurer Doug Morgan chaired the meeting due to the absence of President Sherd. The sad news presented at the meeting was President Doug Sherd is submitting his letter of resignation for health reasons. As a leader Doug realized that his health issues were preventing him from accomplishing the goals he had set for Special Forces Chapter 55 to thrive and grow. In preparation for submitting his letter of resignation Doug took great care to have a new leadership team in place to assure that SFA chapter 55 leadership transition would be smooth and represent a generational change. It should be noted that Chapter Vice President Mike Jaciuk was consulted and presented the leadership transition plan and without reservation offered his resignation as Vice President to speed up the leadership change, Thank You Mike! The Bio's of our new President and Vice President are on the web page and you will have to agree that these are two very capable and impressive leaders that will be leading SFA Chapter 55.

Joe and Lee are looking forward to meeting and getting to know each and every member of our chapter, so make sure you start planning now to attend the DINNER/DANCE in November.

Mike Jaciuk stepped up to help with the cooking at our evening meal. And we thought he could only heat and bend iron, thanks MIKE!

bob nancy

Bob and Nancy taking a break!

Quartermaster Bob Strange and Nancy headed up sales of SFA merchandise as well as running the 50/50 raffle. Bob and Nancy have been the primary source of income for SFA Chapter 55 for the past 4 years through their QM sales and the raffle. We are fortunate to have them watching over the resources of SFA Chapter 55.

A SPECIAL FORCES STORY

The following was written in September 2017 by an Army Aviator who takes a trip down memory lane: Submitted by SFA Chapter 55 Member Tom Wetzel, an original recipient of the Aviator's recollection and briefly had meet Martha Reye at C-1 in Da Nang while serving on A-109 (Thuong Duc).

" It was just before Thanksgiving '67 and we were ferrying dead and wounded from a large GFR West of Pleiku.

We had run out of body bags by noon, so the Hook (CH47 CHINOOK) was pretty rough in the back.

All of a sudden we heard a 'take-charge' woman's voice in the rear.

There was the singer and actress, Martha Raye, with a Special Forces beret and jungle fatigues with subdued markings helping the wounded into the Chinook, and carrying the dead aboard. Maggie had been visiting her Special Forces (SF) "heroes" out 'west'.

We took off, short of fuel and headed to the USAF hospital pad in Pleiku.

As we all started unloading our sad pax's, a USAF Captain said to Martha....."Ms. Raye, with all these dead and wounded to process, there would not be time for your show!"

To all of our surprise she pulled on her right collar and said"Captain, see this Eagle? I am a full "Bird" in the US Army Reserve, and on this is a 'Caduceus' which means I am a nurse with a surgical specialty.....now take me to your wounded!'

He said, "Yes ma'am....follow me."

Several times at the Army Field Hospital in Pleiku, she would 'cover' a surgical shift, giving a nurse a well-deserved break. Martha is the only woman buried in the SF (Special Forces) cemetery at FT. Bragg.

Editor's note: This is a very relatable recollection by the Army Aviator. The date and place "West of Pleiku and before Thanksgiving 67' , Most likely the GFR referred to by the Aviator is known as the Battle of Dak To, hill 875.
